NRM tourism

July 5, 2013 by RCS

Eco-tourism contributes a significant amount to Australia’s economy. The industry relies on effective and sustainable environmental management of the natural landscapes that underpins Australia’s attractiveness to visitors.

Forecasted increase in visitors

Currently, the tourism industry is relatively stagnant and there remains some debate on the causes. Nevertheless, in-depth analysis of the trends underpinning tourism finds that the demand for ecotourism and nature-based holidays is expected to double and even triple in the next 20 years.

Importantly the trends suggest that increased market shares will likely go to tourism operators who “become ‘experience providers’; those that develop intrinsically personal encounters, authentic experiences and opportunities for visitors to contribute to the environment they are visiting.

Offering tourism packages that improve the environment

Reef Catchments Solutions has an interest in bundling and packaging tourism infrastructure, projects and products, and combine these to create innovative ‘Experience Seeker’ tourism itineraries. Itinerary products will be based on; lower volume, higher value participation, contain strong elements of the increasingly popular eco-tourism and cultural tourism themes, including the growing market for ‘Volun-tourism’

These itineraries are designed more for the experienced traveller, those that are seeking unique experiences and whom wish to engage and contribute to their destination and host community during their experiences.
